Mid-term
It is a fact that especially from the XXI century onwards, the Knowledge Society demands the development of new skills and competencies not only in work environments but also in personal life aspects. The way people communicate has changed, human relationships have changed, and the way people work and study have changed, in other words, the world has changed and that change is reflected in all areas of people’s life. Within this context, it is sometimes difficult to find a balance, to keep privacy safe, to turn off the devices, or be off-line just for a few hours. What is more, it seems impossible to imagine life without a Wi-Fi connection and that provokes at some point a toxic dependency.
The whole society is facing a big challenge in this regard since the use of ICT has become a crucial component of people’s everyday lives. To start with, new educational environments request new competencies such as the so-called digital competence. At this point, it is paramount to take into account the role of teachers as cognitive mediators helping in the development of autonomous students showing them the importance of being responsible and reflective of their decisions in order to become digital citizens (Enseñar con Tecnologias 2022, Meeting 8). As stated by Marc Prensky, our students have changed radically. Today’s students are no longer the people our educational system was designed to teach (Prensky 2001).
In a society characterized by a social network structure, in which the value lies in the connection of social networks and users (Enseñar con Tecnologias 2022, meeting 8) teachers must take a good profit from the use of ICT in classrooms, reconsidering both methodologies and content and standing with a responsible, reflective and flexible position that encourages the growth of soft skills among their students.

In the so-called Knowledge Society we are living in, the learning environment has adopted new characteristics, and as a consequence, teachers are facing enormous challenges regarding their roles inside and outside the classrooms. To start with, the constant evolution of digital tools and new ways of communicating provides teachers and students with lots of resources that are available twenty-four hours a day no matter where they are. In line with it, learner autonomy is an ability that makes a difference when speaking about digital citizenship. In the field of education, the concept of autonomy become relevant with the rise of the communicative approach which is student-centered (Enseñar con Tecnologías 2022. Meeting 8). In that context, teachers must be there as a support to help students develop their autonomy in a responsible and conscious way, considering that knowledge is both built and shared by all the participants of the Knowledge Society.
To sum up, the evolution of today´s society has a severe impact on the way learners learn and therefore on the way teachers teach. Based on competencies, the current educational curriculum demands continuous training and commitment from the teachers in order to grow the digital competence required in a new wide, and challenging world that offers bright and endless bridges of knowledge to those who are whiling to cross them.

Here's a little game for you to check your knowledge! Break a leg! 😎
ICT in the Classroom: To be included or to be banned? That's the question!
The Networked Teacher
In this chaotic world
Knowledge is above all
Something to build and share
through platforms, tags, and blogs
In this chaotic world
Teachers don’t go in front
They will be there of course
Side by side to explore
In this chaotic world
The Networked Teacher shows
An open-minded spirit
Flexibility is all!
In this chaotic world
Diversity is on top
Right now this is correct
But tomorrow, who knows?
The challenge for us all
No doubt is to succeed
So teachers and colleagues
Come on! Let’s spread the seeds!
