It is a fact that especially from the XXI century onwards, the Knowledge Society demands the development of new skills and competencies not only in work environments but also in personal life aspects. The way people communicate has changed, human relationships have changed, and the way people work and study have changed, in other words, the world has changed and that change is reflected in all areas of people’s life. Within this context, it is sometimes difficult to find a balance, to keep privacy safe, to turn off the devices, or be off-line just for a few hours. What is more, it seems impossible to imagine life without a Wi-Fi connection and that provokes at some point a toxic dependency.
The whole society is facing a big challenge in this regard since the use of ICT has become a crucial component of people’s everyday lives. To start with, new educational environments request new competencies such as the so-called digital competence. At this point, it is paramount to take into account the role of teachers as cognitive mediators helping in the development of autonomous students showing them the importance of being responsible and reflective of their decisions in order to become digital citizens (Enseñar con Tecnologias 2022, Meeting 8). As stated by Marc Prensky, our students have changed radically. Today’s students are no longer the people our educational system was designed to teach (Prensky 2001).
In a society characterized by a social network structure, in which the value lies in the connection of social networks and users (Enseñar con Tecnologias 2022, meeting 8) teachers must take a good profit from the use of ICT in classrooms, reconsidering both methodologies and content and standing with a responsible, reflective and flexible position that encourages the growth of soft skills among their students.
